About the course

The biopsychosocial (BPS) or ‘enactivism’ model is widely acknowledged. Practitioners  are encouraged to ask patients about mental health and previous types of trauma e.g., self-harm, sexual abuse, depression, but when it actually comes to the moment of asking, how confident are you to ask? Do you do it? What stops you? What do you do with the answers? This course will refresh knowledge, and more importantly challenge you to put that knowledge into practice.

The course aims to be informative and verbally practical, helping you to develop a style of case history taking that incorporates the whole person, and is appropriate to you and your style of practice. It will also provide you with psychological and trauma informed theories that support a professional and relational approach.

The course will encourage sharing knowledge, questioning why we choose to ask (or not ask?) certain questions, and how to look after yourself when hearing emotionally difficult information.

It will provide an opportunity to question, reflect and practically explore:

  • Why and how, you should ask difficult questions?

  • What questions could you, should you be asking?

  • How to go about putting into practice asking those questions?

  • Gain clarity on why you are asking the questions and their relevance.

  • Develop ways to open conversation with a patient.

  • What to do with the answers, and creating your own boundaries?

  • How to hold the space for them and for you.
